Who made Fortress-Werk

So in case if you wonder who I am, this page will be interesting for you!

My real name is Karim Wilhelm Kiel - a programmer, musician, producer, mountainbiker and gamer.
I am currently 20 years old, from Germany and grew up in a little village called Nottensdorf.

When I was younger, I never knew what I would like to become. I started learning cycling with 3 or 4 years and that is still my only and favorite sport and hobby at the same time. However, my parents thought of trying something new. I started with piano lesson, when I reached 6 years. So far that's nothing special. Other children played football, others learned Judo while I took piano lessons. That was in year 2003. After six years in 2009, I stopped playing piano because I literally had no interest in music anymore. So at that time (probably a bit earlier) my father showed me how to make own websites.

As an average kid in school, I had some problems start learning but after a while, HTML and CSS made a lot of fun to learn. I learned it quick and designed my own first homepages. A big shoutout to Johann-Christian Hanke. He is an author of lots of programming books in HTML, CSS and PHP and his texts are entertaining but also understable at the same time. When I want to become better, I started learning PHP and JavaScript. With literally less success... I was really indecisive what to learn so I decided to make music again. I stopped learning programming and started to get better in bass playing (I got one on my birthday in 2008, but I was not really into it.) and later on, I started playing guitar as well. This is a hobby, I never expected to get that good in it and never aimed to become a good guitar player. It basically just happens because of daily playing.

So little by little, I created my Youtube channel, got better in recording, mixing and mastering and so on. Music is still my favorite hobby of all time. When I came to an IT school in 2016 for some reasons, I just tried to make the best out of. We learned to program with Java and slowly, I got more and more into it. After a while and learning more of this in a apprentice ship, I got fully into it! I made plans what I wanted to program and I had a goal, what I wanted to reach! From that point, I founded Fortress-Werk on the 21.12.16! It will be a single-man project by myself and I will develop it further.

Musical influences

As mentioned above, I started playing piano in 2003. I knew about classical composers but I never really listened to music. Around 2007, when I came to a new school and had a long way with the bus, I saw lots of kids who owned a MP3 player. Surely I wanted one too but I did not know what to listen. Means that I slowly got influenced by the music, my father listens to though in like May 2008 as far as I remember. He is born in 1949, so his music is, for sure, the 60 - 80s. I can say that this time around, I started listening music and really liked the 60s music especially. My first favorite song was Something by the Beatles, followed by Funky Town from Pseudo Echo. Over the time to the Summer Holidays 2008 (where I spent my time listening and playing Harvest Moon DS. Gold times), the Beatles got to my first favorite band. I watched their first two movies and documentaries. One year later in summer 2009 holidays (BisaBoard times, gold times), the Beatles helped me a lot getting better in bass, since I started to get better in it and there I found out, how much fun music can be. In September of 2009, I got a guitar but I learned it and I was not that enthusiastic as I thought. Muse also helped me to improve my bass playing to the next level.

Guitar improving basically started in March 2010, where I found the band Oasis. This band is still my top Number 1 for getting good on guitar, although the actual speed I achieve came later. But I learned a bit of singing, rock guitar and bass with this band and I liked them more than the Beatles. I listened to them like endless. Accidentally I found Mattrach a while later. He is the reason with his great rendition of the Canon Rock, that I got into speed picking and all that stuff. End of 2011 I finally got into video game music, which made me to create my channel Metalfortress. People like FamilyJules, CSGuitar89 and mostly ToxicXEternity were the reason to start with the Youtube channel. The last huge inspiration was Fracionado and a lot of electronical artists like Skrillex and Zomboy who got me into covering electronic music on guitar and making electronic music by myself. Started with DubstepFortress as channel now known as Flaggschiff. A rough overview of my listening back to 2009 can be found here.

Here all the bands and artists, where I got my inspiration and formed my musical style (ordered by timeline from 2009 - 2016):

This is the biography in a short form so far. When I get the time, I will expand it and add pictures. Otherwise, feel free to ask me if you have any question.
